La Cuchara Overview

La Cuchara is a hidden gem of a restaurant which is very conveniently located between the Plaça d’Espanya and Plaça Olivar at the edge of Palma de Mallorca’s main shopping district. It’s a little tucked away in a tiny street of shops, so you might not come across La Cuchara by accident, but it’s well worth seeking out – just follow our handy map.
Despite not offering sweeping views, or being on the beach, or part of a grand hotel, La Cuchara has been around for a long time, which is surely simply because of their consistently very good, interesting and inexpensive food, and the warm, friendly reception and subsequent service. Cuisine at La Cuchara is largely based on traditional dishes from the Spanish mainland, in particular the wine producing provinces of the north and north west – Navarra, Galicia, Asturias and the Basque Country. Some of Spain’s finest chefs and cuisine come from these areas and these proud traditions are reflected in the menu at La Cuchara. Local Mallorcan and Mediterranean dishes are also available and, as winter approaches, the menu will include heartier dishes such as stews and casseroles.
Guided by owner Peter Newman, we sampled tapas and small portions of the à la carte dishes on offer and were simply knocked out by the quality and flavor of the food, as well as the presentation. A delicious sobrasada paté was followed by wonderful wild mushrooms, excellent Txistorra frita (little spicy sausages from the Basque Country, served hot), and the splendidly named Gambas en Gabardina, which were succulent and perfectly cooked inside their crunchy batter raincoats. One of the specialities at La Cuchara is the Chuletón de buey, a sort of beef chop served partly cooked on a hot stone – you then finish the cooking as you like it. This cut of beef is delicious – full of flavor thanks to the veins of fat running through it and very moreish!
Thanks to Peter’s generosity, we were able to sample some more dishes at a second visit to La Cuchara. This time we started with a light and creamy Paté de volaille, made with duck and chicken livers flavoured with port, which became an instant favourite. This was followed by Calamarines Fritos, the not-to-be-missed raincoat prawns, and Setas salteados con jamón (a fabulous dish of local wild mushrooms and jamon). Last of all was a foie gras terrine, rich (but not overly so), smooth, delicious and perfectly matched with a glass of sweet white wine.
Quoted in a Daily Telegraph interview, Claudia Schiffer says “... La Cuchara in Palma, Mallorca is probably my favourite restaurant in the world. They do wonderful organic tapas which just taste so rich...” She will get no arguments from us – we think the tapas at La Cuchara are the best we have tasted to date!
All is not lost if you can’t get to La Cuchara for any reason – they will come to you. Outside catering at private homes, on yachts, in fact at any suitable venue, for groups of any size is available from La Cuchara. Menus, and the occasion itself, can be tailored to clients’ exact requirements, for any type of function from a business dinner to a once-in-a-lifetime family celebration.

So glad we went there ...

    Conor Rowlands

Had a wonderful evening out at La Cuchara with family and friends to celebrate one of those special birthdays. Most of the party had never been to La Cuchara before, and the compliments flowed thick and fast! Thanks to Peter and his team, the evening was a complete success, the food was excellent, and the help, advice and service overall was perfect.
