A dark interior with atmospheric music, incense, large carved statues and liberally sprinkled rose petals certainly set up our expectations for a great meal. Unfortunately this restaurant is long on theatrics and short on quality. As soon as we sat down, and without acknowledgement, the waiter filled up our glasses with a poor quality red wine and water. The unique feature of this restaurant is that it serves the same “taster” menu to all customers and the courses change each day. During our visit the main course consisted of 5 small dishes with rice and bread. 3 meat curries and 2 vegetarian. The meat curries each had two pieces of meat (1 piece per person!) and the quality of the meat was poor - the venison was gristly and the lamb was tough. The courses were served and removed so rapidly it felt like being on a conveyer belt – at one point we had to ask for the plates back as we had not finished the food! Despite lingering over the main course our dining experience was over within 45 minutes. As the wine was only begrudgingly served after the main course it was clear there was nothing else to do but leave. A restaurant that relies on so much hype and theatre is clearly trying to divert attention from the food. If you want an excellent meal with a concerned host try the Namaste further up the road.
One of the best Indian Restaurant experiences worldwide when considering total culinary experience including ambience and service. Suited perfectly for the Western palate.
